Marist-LdM Graduate Degree Program

The Master of Arts in Museum Studies is offered by Marist College and the Lorenzo de' Medici Institute, starting in 2010, with courses taught at LdM Florence. The M.A. in Museum Studies offers students an advanced, in-depth exploration of how museums operate within their social and cultural contexts. Museums are studied from an international comparative perspective, with a special emphasis on examining the ways in which these institutions engage with the public. Guest lectures by museum professionals expose students to a wide variety of international perspectives, widening their horizons, while visits to museums, historical monuments, archives, libraries, and other institutions essentially use Florence as a classroom.

The location is appropriate not only because of world-renowned museums like the Uffizi, but because Florence was central to defining what museums are in the past, and is still a crossroads for activities and debates. Not only does the degree program integrate students within local museum culture, it offers them hands-on exposure to real-world museum research and practices. Special emphasis is placed on internship experience where students prepare to manage collections, organize exhibitions and museum events, develop management principles, and/or assist in public outreach and marketing. Lectures, visits and internships all facilitate the important transition from student to museum professional.

The Master of Arts degree requires completion of a minimum of 34 credit hours, including the Master's thesis. The degree may be completed in one calendar year (Fall, Spring and the following Summer sessions).

Session One (Fall):
  • Museums and the Public I: People and Ideas
  • Museums, Galleries, and the History of Collecting
  • Museum Development, Management, and Leadership

    Certificate Programs

The Certificate Programs are designed to offer the students the opportunity to develop, along a structured plan of study, their potential individual creativity, artistic talent and technical and professional skills. These programs provide specific skills in a range of areas, giving students a strong theoretical base on which to develop their practical work. The Certificate Programs offer two study options: the Certificate and the Professional/Advanced Certificate. Students can combine the Certificate and the Professional/Advanced Certificate or choose between them according to their experience and educational levels.

Archaeology and Ancient Studies Certificate Programs

We are pleased to announce our newest offering: the Archaeology and Ancient Studies Certificate Program, offered in collaboration with CAMNES, the Center for Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies. This semester-long certificate, offered at LdM Tuscania + Florence (Fall semester) and LdM Tuscania (Spring semester), fuses theory and practice, history and anthropology in a cohesive learning experience. Each certificate covers ancient and medieval civilization, and both include an archaeology field school experience in Tuscania -- at a large and relatively recent dig whose Etruscan tombs have revealed a wide variety of objects over 2,300 years in age.
