How did your cultural heritage influence your decision to study abroad?
Like most people from the New York City area, my family came from a European background. In my neighborhood, 95% of the residents would have a combined background of either Italian or Irish. And although I had never been to Italy, I felt it was natural to set my sights on a country that has indirectly shaped my life; my friends and I all identified with Italy.

What is one of your most memorable moments abroad?
After my family and I arrived in Italy , we decided to explore the city of Palermo and stumbled across one of the greatest moments an Italian American can come across while roaming the "old country." We found a street named Via Giacalone. Promptly, my father took out his camera and managed to take a full roll of film, shooting the street sign from every angle possible. After we exhausted the street we started to examine the map of Palermo and to our surprise we came across another eye popping discovery. Not only were we standing on the street bearing our last name, we were fifteen minutes north of an entire town. This discovery was certainly a highlight to not just our trip as a family but to my entire study abroad experience. It solidified almost every reason why I chose to live in Italy . There truly is something very grounding about visiting your ancestors' past.  It was a very big check off of my life's "to do" list.
