Description:This course is an introduction to the legacy of the Holocaust and its religious implications. The course explores Christian anti-Judaism as one of many factors in the Nazi rise to power and the "Final Solution". It then proceeds to various accounts of life in the Nazi ghettoes and death camps and deals with Christian and Jewish efforts to remember the Holocaust within particular communities and places. The course will focus on the Holocaust of the Italian Jews. It will begin with an analysis of the emergence of the Fascist movement in Italy, which lead to the Racial Laws. It will proceed with the study of specific stories of persecution, deportation and salvation in the various cities of Italy. We will study in depth the reaction of the Vatican to the Holocaust. In addition we will analyze the reactions of Italian society, starting right after the war up until today, to the Holocaust.
