Description:Students with existing knowledge of piano technique will gain a comprehensive understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of the language of jazz piano improvisation. The course will include a traditional Afro-American repertoire as well as study of the characteristics of jazz writing through the lens of harmonic-functional material. Students will learn the foundations of composition and rearranging scores. The course may also give students the opportunity to practice their own work with a rhythm section (double-bass and drums).
