| Description: | The course is an exploration of the conceptual and stylistic trends governing the art of the 20th century and the very beginning of the 21st century. Including a survey of both European and American art of this period, the course is divided into two main sections: Section One (1900-1950) runs from Post-Impressionism to American Abstract Expressionism, passing through the main European avant-gardes of the modern era. Section Two (1950 - present day) covers the crisis of Modernism, Postmodernism in Europe and America, including post-Dada movements, Pop Art, Minimalism, Arte Povera, Neo-Expressionism in Europe and America, and current global trends. Special focus will be given to the dematerialization of the art object and the birth of the 'concept' as the artistic proposal, which began in 1970s, but which Marcel Duchamp had in many ways anticipated. We will pay attention to philosophical and critical discourses of the period in order to better comprehend art movements, artists, and their context. A mandatory one-day field trip may be included. |
