Lorenzo De' Medici Offers Unique Workshop Opportunities for Credit in Addition to Regular Courses, Summer 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 12, 2007

Florence, Italy - In addition to its regular courses Lorenzo de' Medici offers summer sessions of its normally scheduled courses, it is proud to offer additional educational and professional opportunities to the international community in the form of numerous unique workshops. These workshops are held in either June or July, last four weeks (90 contact hours). Students can take these courses for 6 credits, and will spend 3 weeks in Florence, and one week on location, taking full advantage of Italy's extraordinary cultural and natural resources in locations where LdM has a strong community presence.

Subjects vary widely, including Archaeology, Photography, Watercolor, Drawing, Sculpture and Restoration, all structured under the auspices of LdM's mission of helping students realize their own potential in order to enable their successful interaction with the worldwide community.

Due to the close connections that LdM has with the local communities in Florence, Rome, and Tuscania (and elsewhere), LdM offers workshops in the follow topics; students will learn from instructors who have intimate knowledge of the subject, community, and who have professional experience in the field. These workshops are designed to be academically stimulating and creatively challenging. LdM is well-known as a school that provides students with unique hands-on experiences and unprecedented access to projects, people, and places.

Archaeology: The "Florence and Tuscania Archaeology Workshop" provides students with excellent opportunities to learn and apply an archaeological approach to Etruscan, Roman and medieval periods. Various field trips in Florence, Tarquinia and Norchia will supplement a truly unique experience of participating fully in the excavation of a newly discovered Etruscan necropolis in Tuscania, a beautiful town mid-way between Rome and Florence.

Photography: Taking advantage of the rich Tuscan countryside is the "Florence and Chianti Photography Workshop," in which students learn the basic principles of photography and composition and how to correctly use a camera and properly expose film. Also included in the field of Photography is the "Travel Reportage Photography Workshop." Students in this workshop tackle some of the challenges of capturing landscapes, architecture, portraits, social life, culture, flora and fauna in varying types of light for photo-reportage purposes.

Watercolor and Drawing: Students may enroll in the "Florence and Chianti Sketchbook Workshop" or "Florence and Chianti Watercolor Workshop." Both workshops utilize the beautiful landscapes around the medieval villages of Radda and Gaiole in Chianti, Tuscany, in order to impart traditional forms of sketching, drawing and watercolor painting practiced by Florentine artists for centuries.

Sculpture: The "Florence and Carrara Marble Sculpture Workshop" introduces students to various methods of marble sculpting before moving to Carrara, where work continues in a traditional marble workshop alongside local artisans. Visits to quarries, other workshops, museums and other prominent locations supplement the workshop experience while students deepen their skills with various hand and automatic tools toward the realization of a sculpture of their own.

Restoration: Students in the "Florence and Southern Italy Restoration Workshop" will learn ancient fresco techniques, such as intonaco (mixing of fresh mortar) and the use of a sinopia (preliminary painting for a fresco), as well as those techniques used for oil and tempera paintings. Exciting work on actual 16th - 17th century paintings in the main church of Rocca Imperiale near Cosenza in Calabria will focus on the restoration of authentic polychrome wooden sculptures and mural paintings.
