DO-KNIT-YOURSELF with Pitti Immagine Filati
During the recent "Pitti Immagine Filati ," the LdM Fashion Department was one of only a few schools to participate in the exhibition "DO-KNIT-YOURSELF" held at the Stazione Leopolda. LdM students displayed their final knitwear projects created as part of the LdM course "Knitwear in Fashion Design," taught by Prof. Brenda Cecchi.
Recognizing the importance of knitwear in the industry, Lorenzo de' Medici's "Knitwear in Fashion" course is a drawing and experimental course designed to familiarize students with the knitwear market in fashion and its importance in a modern fashion collection. Students are taught to organize and execute knitwear-design; special emphasis is placed on hand-knitting techniques, which allow students to experiment. There are lectures and trips designed to teach students about the knitwear industry, and the "DO-KNIT-YOURSELF" exhibition provided a perfect venue for that type of exposure.
The Pitti Immagine event, in its 61st year, attracted almost 7,000 visitors - buyers and other industry people from the UK, US, Japan, France, Hong Kong, Spain, Holland, Turkey, Switzerland, China, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, Korea, and Russia. LdM students actively participated in the fashion industry, meeting industry professionals and learning about trends.
According to Elena Ferri, "We want to give [students] a feeling of real life, real work." This also involves learning how to work with other types of designers on such projects. For example, LdM photography students photographed the event, and the graphic design department created LdM-specific publicity, illustrating the extensive collaboration and interdisciplinary approach of the design departments at Lorenzo de' Medici.
