Lorenzo De' Medici Fashion Design Department Finds Innovative Ways to Prepare Students for the Rigors of the Fashion World

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 26, 2007

Florence, Italy - Spring, 2006 - Lorenzo de' Medici's Fashion Design department gives students unique opportunities to expand and utilize their creativity in truly innovative ways, such as the recent "Second Hand, Second Life" and "White Cover" collections. They even have the opportunity to collaborate with Academy Award-nominated costume designer Gabriela Pescucci. All of this is done within an inter-disciplinary approach, in which LdM departments work together whenever possible. In this way, they seek to more completely approximate the type of atmosphere found in the work field where such collaborative skills are absolutely necessary for success.

"One of the real strengths of the Fashion Design department here at LdM is its inter-disciplinary approach," said Supervisor of the Design department Elena Ferri. "Our students don't just learn how to design innovative garments, but through collaboration with the Photography, Film and Video, Writing and other departments in the organization of such events as 'Second Hand, Second Life,' 'White Cover Collection,' and our upcoming work with Gabriela Pescucci, they learn inter-disciplinary collaborative skills untouched in other similar programs. In the real world of fashion, this is absolutely indispensable."

Second Hand, Second Life
In "Second Hand, Second Life," a joint collaboration between Lorenzo de' Medici, the Fondazione Culturale di Responsibilita' Etica, Associazione Pantagruel and Mani Tese, LdM students transformed gently used clothing into innovative new outfits. These outfits were then displayed in the "Second Hand, Second Life" fashion show during the recent Festival della Creativita' at Fortezza da Basso in Florence. However, the collection served a charitable function, as well. All garments were sold, bringing in nearly EU700.00 (700.00€) to be donated through Mani Tese to homeless children in Guatemala.

White Cover Collection
In an international venture between the United States and Sweden, LdM students Miljiana Nikolic, Justin Allen and Kate Feign completed their Fashion Design Certificate with their final project, "Self-making Dress." Through this project, they were brought face to face with all the challenges and elements of creating an actual collection. This was then transformed into a minimalist collection of white clothing entitled the "White Cover Collection," which was displayed in 98 Rosso, one of central Florence's fashionable boutiques. Sophie Davelik and Jamie Tinaglia, also LdM students, served as models for the collection. This transition from studio work to the commercial environment marks a continuing effort on the part of LdM staff to help students enter the real fashion world. Subsequent industry interest in the work of these students has been considerable.

"Margherita da Cortona" Film Costume Design
LdM students this spring will have the exclusive opportunity to work with Gabriela Pescucci, film costume designer and Academy Award nominee for her work on the 2005 version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. LdM students will work alongside Gabriela Pescucci in order to realize the costumes for the upcoming film "Margherita da Cortona." "Margherita" will be the first film resulting from the joint efforts of Lorenzo de' Medici and ACT Multimedia of Cinecitta' in Rome.
