Lorenzo De' Medici Opens New Department of Cultural Studies, Part of a Series of New Academic Initiatives
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 12, 2007
Florence, Italy - Scuola Lorenzo de' Medici has just announced the opening of its new Department of Cultural Studies in Florence. Beginning in September, 2007, courses from a wide variety of subjects will be gathered under the single umbrella of the new Department of Cultural Studies. In each of these areas, Cultural Studies professors will challenge traditional certainties, propose unexpected juxtapositions, and present examples and case studies as cultural artefacts to be interpreted by students.
"The decision to open a Department of Cultural Studies at Lorenzo de'Medici reflects the School's desire to supplement high quality teaching of traditional courses in the Liberal Arts with approaches that are at the cutting edge," said Jonathan Woolfson, Academic Director of Lorenzo de' Medici. "Through the Department of Cultural Studies, the Scuola Lorenzo de' Medici aspires to the interdisciplinary values of Florence of the late 15th century, while at the same time emphasising innovation, flexibility and diversity, allowing students to develop the necessary skills for success in today's competitive labor market."
Other recent academic highlights include: close attention to the recruitment of faculty with strong academic qualifications - including doctorates, research experience and academic publications. LdM is an environment which values academic research, and recognizes the intimate relationship between teaching and research. The faculty development workshop program includes workshops on teaching techniques; topics have included: 'Models of Teaching', 'Multiple Intelligences', 'Learning Outcomes and Course Objectives', and 'Interactive Learning'. Added academic resources include increased library holdings (including online searching capability), wireless capacity, and more computer terminals. These types of enhancements will continue, to open up enormously the potential of material available for professors to teach with and students to learn with. LdM has formed a Strategic Advisory Committee to strengthen the ties between LdM and our affiliate institutions.
