Fourth Annual "The Art Is in the Streets" Competition Empowers Students
Lorenzo de' Medici's fourth edition of "The Art Is in the Streets" student exhibition returned to Florence in May. This annual event brings together the students of Lorenzo de' Medici, local merchants, and the community in the celebration of art. On Saturday, May 8, 150 pieces of student work transformed Via Faenza, the school campus' main street, into an open air gallery. In the day-long exhibition, the product of many weeks of preparation, students competed in the categories of Painting/ Drawing/Printmaking, Sculpture/ Ceramics/Mosaic, Interior Design, Jewelry Design, Graphic Design, and Photography.
The competition stems from the LdM core value encouraging the empowerment of students, and this year's edition outstandingly illustrated the strength of this principle. The event is a celebration of talented students, who show their work along the streets and in dozens of local businesses. An external panel of experts awarded a prize for each category, and for the first time, an award was given to the best work in a beginner-level course. A special exhibition of large-scale drawings by Ed Smith, Marist College Professor and Art Gallery Director, lent resonance to the award ceremony. Certificates were given to the many students who volunteered their assistance in helping to set up the competition.

As always, the competition brings the creativity of LdM students to the attention of the wider public of their adoptive city, Florence. "The talent and creativity of students in the school," says President of LdM, Fabrizio Guarducci, "gives energy to Via Faenza, in the heart of the centro storico of Florence, thanks to the 150 works exhibited. It is a breath of fresh air; the street is enlivened by the efforts of the merchants, public works, and events like these."
This year "Art Is in the Streets" brought Fashion and Performing Arts directly to LdM's main campus building. There, the deconsecrated church of San Jacopo thronged with fellow students attending the Dance Performance in the categories of Classical Ballet, Flamenco, and Jazz Dance. The Fashion Show featured both garments by beginner students and collections designed by advanced LdM Fashion Design students, whose creations dazzled the public drawn to the runway stretching along twilit Via Faenza.
The memorable day concluded with a benefit dinner to aid women in Nigeria, organized by LdM with "Nosotras," a local cultural association providing volunteering opportunities to LdM students.
Empowerment, one of the core values in the LdM mission, is at the heart of this competition and festival. Empowerment encourages accountability, resolve, confidence, the free exchange of ideas, self-expression, and merit. Students are empowered through active participation in the learning process and through many activities sponsored by LdM. As with all Empowerment endeavors, "The Art Is in the Streets" exhibition offers a space among established structures in which people can associate and affirm themselves, and in which individuals and the community can take initiative and build on strengths.
