Lorenzo De' Medici and University of Florence Unearth Rare Etruscan Find as Part of a Unique Institutional Collaboration and Joint Focus on Archaeology
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 12, 2007
Tuscania, Italy, July, 2007 - Lorenzo de' Medici archaeology students, in collaboration with the University of Florence, have uncovered a previously unknown Etruscan necropolis at the Bosco della Riserva-Pian delle Rusciare archaeological site just outside the town of Tuscania. Of special note among the finds of this Hellenistic age structure is a rare bronze mirror engraved with figurative scenes. Excavations will continue in July 2007, with LdM students continuing active involvement in the work.
"The archaeological dig site in progress, located in the hills of Tuscania, represents an optimum occasion for both meeting and collaboration between the students of Lorenzo de' Medici and those at the University of Florence," says Stefano Giuntoli, Doctor of Research of Etruscan Studies and Archeology or the University of Florence
This work has been made possible through the valuable cooperation of Lorenzo de' Medici, the Tuscania civic authority, the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Lazio, and the University of Florence. Project director Dott. Stefano Giuntoli has overseen the excavation, while LdM professor Visentin's archaeology students participated in the successful cleaning, cataloguing and storage of artifacts in Florence, providing them with a truly unique opportunity to handle and study such rare artifacts. With the continued aid of LdM funds and manpower, excavations in Tuscania will continue, with the ultimate goal of creating a new archaeological park around the necropolis for visitors. Archaeology students have many opportunities to study archaeology and also get involved in community projects outside the classroom.
Due to the close connections that LdM has with the local communities in Florence, Rome, and Tuscania (and elsewhere), LdM is well-known as a school that provides students with unique hands-on experiences and unprecedented access to projects, people, and places.
Some highlights from among the Archaeology courses offered by LdM include: Everyday Life in the Etruscan and Roman World, Hands-on History: Archaeology Experience, Medieval Archaeology: The Case of Viterbo and Tuscania, Archaeological Finds Restoration, Identification of the Archaeological Site
LdM also offers summer workshops in Archaeology: "Florence and Tuscania Archaeology Workshop," July, 2007, in which students will be fully involved in the excavation of the Etruscan necropolis mentioned above.
