LdM Archaeology Students Unearth Ancient Etruscan Tomb

The series of excavations planned for 2009, organized by Lorenzo de' Medici under the archaeological supervision of Etruria Meridionale and the town of Tuscania, has unearthed a sepulcher with burial niches dating from the Hellenistic period of the Etruscan civilization. This particular excavation is part of an overall project under the direction of Dott. Stefano Giuntoli, who has already seen some important finds during recent excavations in the Pina delle Rusciare and Fosso Caprino areas, including the discovery of six sarcophagi and a bronze mirror now on display in the National Museum of Riposo.

The Pratino tomb was identified several months ago. Even from the first stages of excavation it proved to be of great interest, due to the fact that it caved in quite early on, thus rendering it virtually untouched over the centuries. Under the direction of Dott. Giuntoli and Dott.ssa Domenica Palmieri, archaeology graduates from the University of Florence and American students enrolled in summer archaeology courses at Lorenzo de' Medici have been working tirelessly at the excavation, with great enthusiasm and a passion which often carries them well beyond the boundaries of a typical day's work.. "All of the finds discovered during these excavations," says Dott. Stefano Giuntoli, "are sent to Florence for restoration, but afterwards will be returned to their place of origin so that they may be put on display in the National Etruscan Museum of Tuscania." The entire excavation area is currently under constant surveillance by the project organizers, as well as the Tuscania police.
