Lorenzo de' Medici Announcements
LdM and NCRC Launch Conflict Transformation Certificate
Today more than ever, there is a great need for students to learn about enlightened and innovative ways to deal with conflicts, whether small or large, interpersonal or international. Starting in Spring 2011, the LdM Florence campus offers a one-semester "Certificate in International Conflict Transformation."
The Certificate Program, subtitled "Preventing, Managing, and Resolving Conflicts," is comprised of five core courses and one language course. These courses, leading to a Certificate of Completion, are offered in collaboration between LdM Florence, in conjunction with the University of Florence Department of Peace Studies, and The National Conflict Resolution Center (NCRC) based in San Diego.
LdM's long-standing partnership with the University of Florence includes the Department of Peace Studies and Social Sciences. LdM's own Department of Peace Studies offers six courses, two of which form part of the new Certificate. LdM instructors bring awareness of special Italian contributions to Peace Studies, as well as their own international activities. The courses underpin the applications for Conflict Resolution in terms of theories, techniques, and modern international political and social contexts.
The National Conflict Resolution Center has become a national and international voice in conflict resolution after more than 25 years of successfully resolving conflicts through mediation and negotiation. NCRC has facilitated the resolution of conflicts in businesses, non-profits, government bodies, communities, and families. This new Certificate includes two intensive courses taught by NCRC staff in Florence.
Based on practical experience, these courses - case-based and hands-on --go beyond conflict theory to train students in the practical skills people need to manage a wide range of conflicts in the real world.
The Certificate now offers an exciting new opportunity for students to acquire important professional skills in the stimulating, intercultural setting of LdM Florence.
Certificate Courses:
Intercultural Communication
Anthropology of Violence and Conflict
International Conflict Resolution
From Discord to Harmony: the Theory and Practice of Conflict Resolution
Advanced Conflict Dynamics
Italian Language
Campus Addition: Palace of Palla Strozzi
The most recent addition to the LdM Florence campus is an entire floor of the Palace of Palla Strozzi, built in the Renaissance, containing a student lounge and 14 newly renovated classrooms. This addition on Piazza Strozzi is conveniently close to the other LdM facilities.
It now links LdM to another historical area of central Florence which is also a kind of hub for the arts and commerce. Nearby are Piazza della Repubblica and elegant Via Tornabuoni. Palazzo Strozzi contains three research institutes and Florence's most dynamic center for exhibitions and contemporary art. The Odeon theatre, the historic movie palace on the corner, is where LdM hosts the chief Student Orientation sessions, at which representatives of community institutions, like the U.S. Consulate, are speakers.
The new space quickly won over its first classes. LdM is proud of this new extension, where Liberal Arts courses now take place in a quadrangle of rooms that happily combine the latest in efficiency and updated technology with a magnificent historical setting.

the archaeological supervision of Etruria Meridionale and the town of Tuscania, has
unearthed a sepulcher with burial niches dating from the Hellenistic period of the
Etruscan civilization. This particular excavation is part of an overall project
under the direction of Dott. Stefano Giuntoli, who has already seen some important
finds during recent excavations in the Pina delle Rusciare and Fosso Caprino areas,

Lorenzo de' Medici is proud to announce the first edition of Film Spray! Eight films will be projected in the Chiesa di San Jacopo in Campo Corbolini and CINEMA CIAK, specially opened for the event. Both venues are found in Via Faenza, Florence. The philosophy underlying the event is linked to the pacifist movement of Empowerment, which seeks to develop a parallel, real, and self-organized economy from the marginalised sectors of society. The audience will receive voting cards through which they will rate the features viewed contributing to the election of the winning film.

Inauguration of New Museum, "La Casa di Giotto"

Lorenzo de' Medici has established a new collaboration with the Casa di Giotto, the historic house believed to be the birthplace of the artist, Giotto di Bondone. The house is located in the beautiful countryside near the town of Vicchio, about 30 minutes north of Florence. Under the direction of LdM professor Valentina Zucchi, the house has recently been restored and converted into a multimedia museum for adults and children, dealing with Giotto and the art and life of his times. Giotto (born 1267, died 1337), the founding father of Italian Renaissance art, revolutionized the painting of his time and has left the world famous works of art in many Italian cities, including Padua, Assisi and Florence. The municipality of Vicchio was also the birthplace of the Renaissance artists Beato Angelico and Benvenuto Cellini. Lorenzo de' Medici restoration students have been restoring a local chapel in the area.
The collaboration with the Casa di Giotto forms part of LdM's expanding offerings in Museum Studies. Interns from Lorenzo de' Medici have worked on the design and development of the new museum and it is envisaged that future interns will continue to work there. This expands the large range of internship opportunities already available in museums for LdM students. At the same time, LdM intends to hold conferences, classes and meetings in the Casa di Giotto.
The opening of the new museum takes place on Saturday, 11 October, 2008, at 3pm.
